Q&A with Ernie Cottier: Communications Strategist, Strategy

Ernie Cottier recently joined Centrifuge Media as a Communications Strategist! We gave Ernie some time to settle into the role then asked him a few questions about his career and interests!

Q:

What was your path to Centrifuge Media?

A:

I graduated in December of 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with an emphasis on broadcast journalism.  I immediately began working for a news station in South Dakota as a live reporter, anchor, and producer. I moved down to North Carolina in the summer of 2023 to be closer to some family and friends while also wanting to live in a warmer climate. I worked in PR for just under two years after moving here for a firm in Raleigh. I was excited when I heard about the opportunity at Centrifuge Media, as I thought it would combine many of the skills I had gained in previous positions while still providing ample room for me to acquire new ones.

Q:

What aspect of your role are you most excited about and why?

A:

Seeing ideas come to life. One day, you’re part of a team brainstorm to come up with ideas for a client’s event, and the next, you’re seeing a room light up, watching hundreds of people enjoy something I helped create.

Q:

You can offer a client one piece of advice when partnering with Centrifuge Media. What would it be?

A:

Don’t be afraid to dream big. Some of the best things come from the most unconventional ideas.

Q:

What specific projects or moments in your career/life has fueled your passion and kept you motivated?

A:

Helping people face their fears has always been something that excites me. Whether it was encouraging someone nervous about being on TV, or at Centrifuge supporting someone anxious about an event, or stepping on stage, I love coming alongside them, preparing together, and then seeing their joy when they realize they’ve overcome it.

Q:

What do you like to do in your free time when you aren’t working?

A:

I love playing and watching sports, especially with my family. I originally went to school to become a sports broadcaster so I could talk sports with people for hours. I have also coached both soccer and basketball and would love to coach my daughters someday.

Q:

What is inspiring you right now?

A:

My daughters Lily and Lainey. Many people lose their curiosity as they age, but seeing my daughters so curious and unafraid to ask questions inspires me to do the same.  They say “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” but I think if people are curious enough, they’ll always be learning new tricks.

Q:

For a presentation or speech finale: End with a big “mic drop” moment or leave them wanting more?

A:

I love a good mic drop moment because it can also lead people to wanting more.
